Pedestrian crossing - Portsmouth

Synchronized pedestrian detection crossing - Portsmouth

This test site in Portsmouth is located on Clarendon Road. This uncontrolled crossing links two busy pedestrian areas as well as two bus stops which are located nearby.

This project uses thermal cameras to detect pedestrians who are on the point of crossing. Additional cameras using Starling Technologies XX to measure traffic parameters and effectiveness of Flowell are also involved.

OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT

MAKE THIS ZEBRA CROSSING SAFER AND

  • Increase the visibility of the crossing area
  • Help pedestrians to feel safer.
  • Reduce the number of priority denials (cars/pedestrian)
  • Reduce jaywalking
RESULTS OF THE PILOT
  • In dim light and at night improvements can be noted, but there are no particular benefits during the daytime.
  • Jaywalking was slightly reduced. The initial assessment before implementation of Flowell had shown a low number of jaywalkers at this location.
  • More than half of the drivers reported that the system made them more aware of the pedestrians and their respective priorities.
