Pedestrian crossing - Mandelieu-la-Napoule

This pilot was the first ever field trial in France (2019). It involves 4 pedestrian crossings located near the exit of the A8 motorway where drivers must reduce their speed from 110 km/h to 50km/h and stop when traffic lights are red.

THE INITIAL TRAFFIC SURVEYS SHOWN THAT
  • Traffic lights are not well synchronized and do not leave enough time for the elderly or PRMs to cross in one go.
  • The duration of the red signal for pedestrians tends to encourage some to cross out of phase
  • One of these crossings has poor visibility
  • Some drivers stop on the crossing during rush hour, thus hindering pedestrians who are trying to cross.
THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES WERE THEREFORE SET
  • Help pedestrians to cross more safely.
  • Improve pedestrian priority
  • Help pedestrians to feel safer, especially the elderly and vulnerable users
  • Encourage pedestrians to better comply with traffic signals.
  • Slow down vehicles
THE PROJECT

Flowell dynamic zebras were installed on three controlled crossings and one uncontrolled crossing (connected to motion cameras). The experiment spanned two years and two operating scenarios were tested.

RESULTS
  • The proportion of vehicles slowing down more cautiously before the crossings increased by 13%
  • This safe behaviour was also seen when no pedestrians were crossing
  • Reduction of jaywalking during the night
  • Better compliance of pedestrians with traffic signals (+25%)
  • The greatest improvements were seen at the uncontrolled crossings where priority denials were reduced to less than 3% following the installation of a Flowell system.
